Anti-Bully Photography Series: Part 4

According to stopbullying.gov, persistent bullying can lead to depression, anxiety and feelings of isolation among other things, all of which can contribute to suicidal thoughts. LGBTQ kids are more prone to suicidal thoughts, even without bullying, so adding it in is never good.

Coleman Wigger, my next model for the anti-bullying project, experienced such bullying when he was a teenager. He also suffered from suicidal thoughts and actions. I’ll let him tell you about the bullying he experienced.

“Children today still have a lot of problems with prejudice when it comes to being LGBTQ, but in my day it wasn't spoken about. I felt bullied by the few other children that knew, society, and even family. They wanted me to conform to what was expected as the norm. I did for a while but I had enough around age 26. That's when I came out as gay. In turn, I lost several friends, so-called friends I must say. Many sad times. In later years I got over most of it and started living life my way. So if you are being bullied for being LGBTQ tell someone, try your best not to let it get to you, most of all please, please don't harm yourself. You are beautiful. You have a right to live your life as much as anyone else. There are people that understand what you are being bullied for so seek them out. Keep your head up, do you best, and know you are loved.”

No one should never badger and push kids to do something they don’t want or be someone they aren’t. It just doesn’t work, and can lead to heartache for everyone involved.
